The world speeds up.
The best thinking comes when you slow down.
Executive Coach & Practitioner Researcher.
IT’S NOT YOU
The pace is brutal, and the old blueprint no longer works. You re-read the same email four times. You snap over something small. More willpower won't fix that. That's not a character flaw. It's what happens when your conditions quietly drain your best thinking before you've even noticed.
Constant change, and now AI, keep the nervous system on alert. An alert nervous system doesn't think, feel, or communicate like a calm one. This isn't only about the brain. It's systemic.
This is the exact pattern I've spent the last year researching formally.
This isn’t about motivation.
It’s about conditions.
THE MECHANISM
What's actually being switched.
Illustrative of the mechanism described in Canas (2026), "Cognitive Friction: The Accumulated Performance Cost of Cognitive Strategy Switching in Professional Work". Available here at SSRN.
A SYSTEMIC LENS. FORGED IN PRACTICE
Switching between modes all day, every day, and running out of gas before the morning's even over, not because I lack resilience, but because of what fast-paced, high-complexity work does to anyone caught in it. Which is exactly what this approach uncovers: not just what skill you need, but the system you're actually operating in, the pressures, the contradictions, the hidden rules.
And the whole person moving through it: how you think, how you feel, what your body is telling you.
This isn't a framework to follow. It's a way to use what's already there as raw material, to build the one that actually fits you.
I’ve been here. Not theoretically.
Actually here.
WHERE IT COMES FROM
Trained. Then lived.
For 10 years, I have designed and delivered training programmes and workshops focused on human skills, and coached both managers and individual contributors with and without leadership responsibility.
My approach is brain-based and strengths-focused.This is not only about training. For years, and still now, I have lived that same pace and complexity as a senior professional in talent development inside fast-moving IT environments, not just as someone shaping them from the outside.
Beyond the corporate context, I co-founded Surf.ART, a therapeutic surfing programme within Pressley Ridge, a US-founded non-profit, operating in Portugal as an independently registered affiliate. Over several years, I worked hands-on with children from vulnerable backgrounds and the systems surrounding them. That work sharpened my ability to hold complexity and stay steady under pressure, the same capacity I bring to teams navigating their own high-stakes conditions today.
Surfing teaches you to read conditions rather than force a plan.
The Thinking Standard
MY RESEARCH.
That curiosity about thinking and change became The Thinking Standard, a project on how we deliberately redesign work to protect human depth in the age of AI. Right now, I'm also researching this formally and publishing it as working papers on SSRN and ResearchGate.
I could have kept this as an observation, but the depletion I mentioned earlier deserved more than that. So I'm building the evidence properly: published working papers, methodology that can be challenged and tested, not just a framework I'm asking you to trust. That's the standard I hold this research to.
